COVERED SHELTER FOR OUTDOOR PLAY AREA
HEXHAM PRIORY SCHOOL
BACKGROUND
A full review of Northumberland’s Special Educational Needs services and provisions was undertaken in October 2011 and the recommendations put out to consultation in autumn 2012.
The feedback resulted in all the Northumberland special schools having their age range revised, to accommodate a number of young people, who whilst resident in Northumberland were dependent upon Special Schools located outside of the County to provide their specialist education.
Following this decision, the County Council carried out an audit to assess the amount of building work required to facilitate the increased number of pupils.
As part of these works, d3associates were invited to put forward proposals for the design of two contemporary glass canopies 6.5m in length and 2.7m deep to provide a covered shelter for outdoor play and activities.
OUTCOME
d3associates worked closely with the staff to develop the design of the canopies and sought quotations from specialist manufacturers for the installation.
Once the costs were established and agreed, planning permission was sought and the construction work managed on site. Other works included alterations to the soft play areas and the installation of low level fencing.
d3a liaised closely with the school throughout the process to understand their requirements and achieve a well crafted design. The projects were delivered to timescale and within budget.
